A remarkable 17th-century French-language devotional book, Sermons pour tous les jours du Carême by celebrated Jesuit preacher Louis Bourdaloue. Published in Brussels in 1693, this first volume contains sermons intended for the days of Lent.

Bound in richly aged brown leather with a beautiful raised-band spine, gilt lettering and intricate gilt tooling, the book bears more than three centuries of natural wear. Inside, the title page retains its finely printed ornamentation and early handwritten notations. An engraved ownership bookplate provides another wonderful glimpse into the book’s long history.

Remarkably, the volume is complete and remains firmly bound, with all pages and components well attached. The leather shows expected rubbing and losses, while the pages have age-related toning, foxing and markings consistent with a book dating to the late 1600s.

A beautiful piece of European history, now over 330 years old.

Brussels, 1693.
