Antique 1883 Walter Chesterton Original Watercolour – Calgary River Landscape

A beautiful original 19th-century watercolour by British-born Canadian artist Walter Chesterton (1845–1931), depicting an early landscape of the Calgary area, dated 1883.

This delicate composition captures a winding river beneath distant mountains, with open prairie, scattered buildings and a solitary figure walking along a rocky hillside. Soft blues, muted greens and warm earth tones beautifully reflect the expansive Western Canadian landscape.

Born in London, England, Chesterton trained as an architect before immigrating to Canada in 1870. He worked primarily as an architect while also painting Canadian landscapes in oil and watercolour. His work was exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy and the Art Association of Montreal.

The watercolour is signed and dated 1883 in the lower left corner. A handwritten inscription on the reverse identifies the scene as the Bow River, Calgary, N.W.T., while the auction catalogue identifies it as the Elbow River.

Presented in an ornate gilt-toned frame with decorative raised detailing and traditional matting.
