Antique French Barbotine Majolica Tiles, c. 1880–1910

A charming collection of antique French ceramic tiles, each individually decorated in colourful raised relief. The six designs include a flying bird, flowers, butterfly, grapes and game bird, finished in rich green, ochre, pink, blue and cream glazes. Beautifully aged, with crazing, glaze variation and wear consistent with their age.

The backs show plenty of age and remnants of old mortar, suggesting they were originally installed architecturally rather than produced simply as decorative plaques.

France, circa 1880–1910
