An oval portrait of Marie Henriette Georgina Chardin, softly rendered in warm, muted tones and set within a classic gilt frame with layered matting. The composition has a quiet, romantic presence, with delicate detailing and a gentle, timeworn quality that adds depth to any space.

What makes this piece especially meaningful is the handwritten inscription preserved on the reverse, identifying the sitter and offering a glimpse into her life. Marie Henriette Georgina Chardin was born in 1804, married in 1828 to Louis du Mesnil de Maricourt (later Count of Maricourt and a consul), and passed away in 1829 at just 25 years old. The inclusion of her name and life details transforms this from a decorative portrait into a deeply personal historical piece.

The portrait itself appears to date to the early–mid 19th century (c. 1820–1850) in style, while the framing and backing are later, likely done in France in the mid–late 20th century, preserving and presenting the work for display.

Hand-painted, likely watercolor or gouache on paper.

Dimensions: 11” x 13.5”
