A wonderful piece of Victorian English kitchen history — this “Queen’s Pudding Boiler” No. 16 was patented by William Challis in the late 19th century and designed to make perfectly steamed puddings without the fuss of cloth-wrapping.
Crafted in white glazed ironstone and stamped in black transfer with the royal crest and “Challis No. 16 Patent,” this piece would have been used for traditional steamed puddings — think Christmas pudding, treacle sponge, or suet pudding — gently suspended in boiling water using its original metal cradle.
The surviving metal base and wire support make this example especially desirable, as many have been separated from their fittings over time.
Beautifully simple in form, with honest age and subtle surface wear that speaks to years in a hardworking English kitchen.
