A striking Canadian landscape by William John Hopkinson (1887–1970), depicting the Vermilion River winding through the dramatic mountain landscape of British Columbia.

Painted in oil on board, the work has wonderfully expressive, heavily textured brushwork, with deep blue-grey mountains and dark evergreens contrasted by touches of autumnal rust and the pale reflective water below. Signed W.J. Hopkinson at the lower right.

The reverse is hand-titled “Evening – Vermilion River B.C.” and bears a charming personal inscription: “To Margy and Hoppy, With Love from David, Christmas 1968.” This provides a lovely dated piece of provenance associated with the painting.

Presented in an ornate gilt frame that complements the rich tones of the landscape beautifully.
